Take Back the Night: A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT

My favorite vampire movie used to be Dreyer's 1932 VAMPYR, a film that is more about occult obsession than bloodsucking. It's a haunting--even possessed--movie, and I love it. But like I said, it used to be my favorite vampire flick.

My new favorite is Ana Lily Amirpour's A GIRL WALKS HOMES ALONE AT NIGHT, which is a cinephile's delight. It knowingly, lovingly, nods towards a whole range of movies from LET THE RIGHT ONE IN to Spaghetti westerns to SIN CITY to NADJA. But in the overall effect it achieves it is distinctive and brilliantly fun.

I wrote a review of the film over at Tor.com. Click here to check out Take Back the Night: A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT.
