I take it for what is is, a drama that contains comedy and wit. I'm not bothered by the cutesiness or the so-called skirting of issues. In fact, if anything, I see this as an anti-war, not a pro-war, story, rather ahead of its time, packaged in a slick Hollywood wrapper that nevertheless transcends much of the artificiality of the typical 1950s Hollywood product. I'm perefectly competent to judge fine films by ghe true masters of the medium. But I can also appreciate popular entertainment.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11655962442657373230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961352325595827919.post-4104049857146249602017-01-20T16:11:57.622-06:002017-01-20T16:11:57.622-06:00Have you seen IDA? A Polish films about a nun who discovers that her parents were Jews killed in the Holocaust. Powerful piece of work.

I love La passion de Jeanne d'Arc! Have you watched Dreyer's other films like Ordet and Day of Wrath? So incredible. I think he's the greatest director of religious subjects we ever had.

And, yeah, big thumbs up to A Nun's Story. It's so quietly powerful, and it's interesting to see Audrey doing a contemplative drama rather than the light comedies that made her famous.Jake Hinksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12959106997436699346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961352325595827919.post-70328741007270388562017-01-18T23:28:01.151-06:002017-01-18T23:28:01.151-06:00Ooh I love the Trial. That performance is so iconic, but he was so far ahead of his time with it. It's such a tragedy that the public never got over it and could only see him as Norman Bates, which it took him a long time to accept. Some of his European films after Psycho showcased his other sides nicely (e.g. Goodbye Again).

I'm very obvious/heavy handed about these things and I love most movies featuring nuns, when it's done respectfully. I am not religious at all and don't have a Catholic background, but there's something enticing in seeing nuns' daily lives and routines portrayed. My very favorite is The Nun's Story, in which I think Audrey Hepburn does her best work. Other favorites include Ben-Hur, The Song of Bernadette and La passion de Jeanne d'Arc. (I know, I'm so uncool.) However I do also think that 2001: A Space Odyssey is a very spiritual experience. It's the only movie I can think of that achieves a truly meditative outlook.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961352325595827919.post-417434623177773322017-01-17T16:58:01.201-06:002017-01-17T16:58:01.201-06:00Thanks! I love him in PSYCHO of course, but my favorite Perkins performance is in THE TRIAL. He's just so perfect in that--sarcastic, anxious, a little creepy. Love it. Love him.

What are your favorite movies with religious themes?Jake Hinksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12959106997436699346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3961352325595827919.post-84728392580026265762017-01-17T00:48:17.425-06:002017-01-17T00:48:17.425-06:00Great review of a mess of a film. As a fervent Perkins fan this was a must-watch for me (sadly he got his only Oscar nomination for this), but the end result is an overlong scramble. I am too very into movies about religion, and you make very astute points about the mishandling of the subject here.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
